“Otaku” is the Japanese word for nerds, geeks and anybody who exhibits extreme devotion to a particular hobby. This lifestyle can also be interpreted as a response to the ever-greater onslaught of information and the increasing complexity of the social world. In contrast to the mainstream, which endeavours to be at least a little part of everything, the Otaku devotes himself entirely to a single passion. Restricting his own world to a specific theme makes it more manageable. As a result, it becomes easier for the Otaku to find his own place. Geeks seek their status in parallel universes.

Although in principle any theme can be the object of desire, one of the biggest communities consists of Otakus with an interest in mangas and anime (Japanese cartoons). Danny Choo, an expert member of this scene, will report on the special breed of passion and expertise that every Otaku brings to his subject area; on the deliberate play with alternative identities, both online and offline; and on the willingness to invest a substantial amount of time and money in collecting merchandising products.
